[Re]Creating Memories

I was 12 when this photo was taken. My brother, in worn out denim with dirt stains, was 16. His loyal Plott hound, Shadow was 4 (according to my mother’s handwriting on the back of the photo).

Their relationship was a made-for-tv-movie about a boy and his dog.

The blanket in this photo had already seen so much use by this time – I don’t even know exactly when he got it. It was faded, dingy, stained, and pilled…. and it was loved.

My grandmother made that blanket for my brother. She had made me a quilt – but that’s another story for another time. This blanket was Navajo looking. It had fringe on it… it was relatively masculine, but most importantly, my brother L-O-V-E-D this blanket.

You know there are some people who are not “craft worthy” when it comes to giving gifts? My grandmother knew that if she made my brother something, he would love it – he was craft-worthy to her. Those two had a connection unlike any other. My brother was someone my grandmother really connected to beyond the obligatory family relationship. They laughed together, had inside jokes together, could sit and talk for hours.

A few months ago I was browsing around vintage patterns and I found “the” blanket. I had not thought of the striped Navajo blanket .. heck, ever. It was just a piece in my past but when I saw the picture on the pattern, I had so many memories flood back to me – You have heard about smells triggering memories; just the right perfume can take you back to thoughts of your favorite teacher or warm baking cookies link to memories of your grandmother. This blanket was some sort of portal to a surprisingly large amount of memories – one cascading into the next, turning into a story telling session about Shadow and my brother, my cat Clyde…. It was pretty intense and even looking at that photo now, I have tears in my eyes.

I bookmarked the pattern on Ravelry, not sure what my real intention was. Should I recreate the blanket my grandmother made for my brother when he was probably 12 or so… or just take it as a reminder to so many good memories of my childhood?

I made the bold decision to re-create it for a Christmas or birthday present, whichever it is done by. I have been working on it as much as possible and it is growing slowly. I do think he will really like it and appreciate it. I am hoping he won’t take it negatively in my trying to replace what grandma had done for him – I doubt he will.

The oddest thing for me is holding a memory in my hand – but its a good odd.

Definitely a good odd.

Well.. here I am – 3 weeks of no posts. How in the world did that happen? Even more so questionable – where in the world did September go???

My crochet and knitting time has been drastically sparse this last month, which is very sad for me. Not only do I have my Christmas items to get through, I have had a promise to do another tutorial for HeadHuggers.org on the burner for well over a month and I just haven’t got to it. I feel terrible about it and hope to get to it soon.

Because I haven’t updated, I’m just changing the title to week 11 and will just have to accept the jump between week 8 to 11. It happens.

I have no real excitement to report from the list. I have finished no more items. I have been spending the little time I have working on the Navajo Indian afghan. I have it listed as a birthday gift but I tell ya – I’m shooting for Christmas on this one.

Something else I’ve been trying to do is find the stinking pictures of the original -ghan my grandmother made. First and foremost, to verify my colors are right – which, now that I’m about 2 feet into it, its a little late for that. Second, I wanted to show you the picture and let you see what he had and then what I am making.

Perhaps I shall post this message and go out to the garage and look. I really thought I had them in the storage room downstairs, but…. after a search party came back with a firm “not there” – the garage is my only other option.

I do apologize for my absenteeism as of late and hope to rectify that by being around more, finishing up the HeadHuggers tutorial and getting some other posts up besides weekly updates. My blog has its ups and downs, and for those of you who stuck with me through this “down” – I really appreciate it.

Of course, I cannot leave you without an image, so please enjoy this picture of DC being very serious with his nerf guns. I found this picture on my camera – I think he and his friend were making a home movie and took my camera… this was one of the snapshots.

The videos are even better.

I love surprise photos. They make me giggle.

There has been another shift in the list – I finished the Spidey-inspired round ripple afghan for my grandson. I’m very excited to have it done and have already started hooking on the Navajo Indian Multi-Color Afghan for my brother – I have that listed as a birthday gift BUT if I get it done soon enough, it will be a Christmas present. I’d prefer it be a Christmas present, but we shall see.

First, before I go on with anything else – here is a picture of the Spidey Round Ripple.  I did not have a space big enough to lay it out. It is significantly larger than the round ripple baby afghan I made a month or so ago for a co-worker. It covers a little more than half of a twin size bed. From this project, I also created a video tutorial on how to do the surface crochet on top of a round ripple (found here).

I added another item to the Added Items area of the list too – a Harry Potter scarf. Red Heart has started doing team spirit yarn – a two tone yarn that stripes itself – so I found the gold and burgundy and figured I’d make a scarf – if not for me, I know my son would love one. I am thinking of going back and grabbing the other Hogwart colors because I’m nerdy and fun that way. I’d love to have a Hufflepuff scarf.

I have to admit that I’m a little nervous about getting all my Christmas crafting done in time for the holiday. We just started September and I have an afghan on the hooks – and honestly, this afghan is going to be a BEAST… wait, I already used that phrase for the State Fair project…. uhm…. this one is going to be a nightmare – why, you ask? Because I had to increase the size significantly to suit my brother. My brother is 6’7″ and his wife is about 6′ tall. So for this blanket to work for them, I had to make it a good 7 foot wide. After working about 5 hours on it, I have about 3 inches done. It is done in single crochet with a drop double …. it’s definitely going to take a while – this is primarily why I listed this item as a birthday present.

But what makes this blanket special is my grandmother, the same one I have blogged about numerous times already, made this exact pattern for him when he was a boy. I remember that blanket and can see it when I close my eyes – it was part of his childhood. I don’t know where the afghan went but I do know he doesn’t have it anymore. One day, when I was going through Ravelry, I saw it – and immediately knew I had to make one for my brother. Right now, I’m three color changes into the pattern and I have had so many memories come back to me – I know I’ll be blogging about the experience very soon.

As far as progress is concerned – I think I’m going to have to do at least 1 color change a day to have a shot at finishing this thing on time.

The only other thing I know I must get done in the next week is a requested video tutorial. JB asked for this tutorial quite a bit ago but medical issues and some other work related things have kept me from doing it. I attempted to do the tutorial last week – what happened was I decided to do the tutorial outside for lighting…. and it started raining when I was about 3/4 of the way through. I haven’t had much luck since then – the surface crochet tutorial went ok…. but the hat…. not so much. *frowns*

I’ll get it done though – I am persistent!

Sooooo other than all that, I don’t have  much more to talk about so I’ll leave you with the detailed list of what I have on the list, what I have added, and of those categories – what is done.
